As everyone learns differently, we use a wide range of teaching techniques within our training sessions including demonstrations, discussion, video and occasional powerpoint presentations. You'll also need to complement your studies by reading books from our recommended book list. In our Students Area you'll find additional resources such as articles, videos and scripts. We truly believe however that there is no better way to learn and gain confidence than through practising what you see and read about with real people.
Will there be practical demonstrations?
Absolutely! Demonstrations are a regular feature of our training sessions, with both students and volunteer clients enjoying the experience of hypnosis, coaching and other therapeutic techniques.
Will I get to practise my training?
Yes, yes, yes! We believe that practising your hypnotherapy skills is essential, so you will get many opportunities to work with others in the group. You'll also complete case studies for each module which will involve working with volunteer clients.
How will I be assessed?
You will receive regular feedback throughout your training and written feedback on your assignments and portfolio work.
How big are class sizes?
We think small is best, so our class sizes for diploma training are normally limited to 12 but are often smaller. This means that you will get plenty of tutor attention and the opportunity to gain experience working with a number of other students.
If I want to qualify quicker, is that possible?
Yes. You can fast-track your training by attending our summer school intensive course. This is a 4-week course that covers the same material as our weekend classes, with assessments.
How can I be sure that this training will be right for me?
You can book to attend one of our Discovery Days. You'll meet the principal and main tutor, find out about hypnosis and join in a practical exercise. We'll explain our training course structure and you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about career options on qualification.
If you can't make one of these taster days you are welcome to come and meet us at another time.
Costs and commitment
I've not done any studying for a very long time. Will that be a problem?
Many of our students are in this position, so don't be concerned. Our course is eligible and suitable for people who may be returning to study after a long gap. You can study at your own pace and you have up to two years to complete your HPD portfolio for its final assessment.
How much study time will I need in addition to attendance?
It's impossible to be precise on this, but you'll need to allow a few hours a week for reading, practising and assignments.
Do I need to buy books and how much will they cost me?
You will need to read a selection of books in order to complete your studies. Most students want to have a small collection of important books to refer to in the future. Second-hand copies can often be found on-line. LHA students receive a discount on all Crown House publications.
Are there any additional costs to qualification?
If you choose to do the additional HPD qualification the fee for assessment is £247 and there is a nominal fee if you choose to attend an HPD preparation day. Your case studies are assessed as part of your course fee.
Accreditation & Qualification
What is the Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (NCH)?
The Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) is a credible, externally validated qualification in hypnotherapy. Equivalent to a foundation level degree, the HPD is a Level 4 qualification. To gain the HPD (NCH) you are required to attend all five modules of our Hypnotherapy Practitioner Programme and then to complete the required assignments and portfolio or professional discussion (oral examination). You have up to two years to complete your HPD (NCH).
Can I just do one module?
Our diploma training is comprised of five interactive modules and you will need to attend all modules to qualify from our course as a professional hypnotherapist. Fewer hours or modules would not meet National Occupational Standards nor the criteria of most professional associations such as the NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) and the APHP (Association for Professional Hypnosis & Psychotherapy). We therefore don't offer the option to attend singular modules except as CPD (Continuous Professional Development) for qualified therapists.
How will I be assessed?
You will get regular verbal feedback from your tutor on your work and practical sessions. Written feedback will be given on your homework assignments (case studies). Your externally accredited Hypnotherapy in Practice (HPD) portfolio will be assessed by an NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) assessor. S/he will feed back to you on any additional work that may be required, allowing you to re-submit your work once corrected. This qualification can also be achieved through the Professional Discussion route; an oral qualification which is conducted via two extended phone calls with the NCH assessor.
What qualification will I get?
After successful completion of your group training, short question papers and your case study assignments, you'll be awarded the LHA Hypnotherapy Diploma. This will allow you to arrange professional insurance, join a professional association and the CNHC,and to set up in practice.
If you choose to undertake the NCH Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) you'll receive it once your portfolio has been marked by the NCH assessor or you have successfully completed the Professional Discussion route to qualification. Please see the answer above.
Is the qualification recognised?
Yes. In fact the HPD is considered by many as the 'Gold Standard' hypnotherapy qualification, as it is externally accredited.
Is there a written exam?
There is no 'sit-down' exam, but you will be sent a short written assignment to complete at the end of each module to complete in your own time and to submit your work electronically. Your case study assignments will be marked in-house.
Your HPD (Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma) portfolio will be assessed by an NCH Assessor. Portfolios may be randomly checked by verifiers.
Who accredits this course?
The Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma is a Level 4 qualification, accredited by the NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) and the Northern College of Further Education (NCFE).
Which professional bodies can I join/become a member of?
You will be registered as a student member of the APHP (Association for Professional Hypnosis & Psychotherapy) and the NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) at the start of your training. The cost of this is included in your LHA training. On qualifying, you can upgrade your NCH and APHP membership.
If I want to qualify quicker, is there a way I can do that?
Yes. You can enrol for our fast track intensive summer school. You will cover the same content and complete similar assignments and question papers.
When I have finished my qualification what will I be able to call myself?
Once you have completed your qualification you can call yourself a hypnotherapist or a clinical hypnotherapist.
How soon can I practise after completing my training?
You can set up in practice as soon as all your assignments have been marked and you have received your LHA Hypnotherapy Diploma. You will need to upgrade your student membership of the APHP (Association for Professional Hypnosis & Psychotherapy) and NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) to full membership. You will also need to arrange your own professional insurance before seeing paying clients; we can suggest some professional insurers to you.
What follow on training could I do?
There are a wide variety of CPD (Continuous Professional Development) courses available at LHA and other colleges which will help you to extend your knowledge.
Help & support
What is in the Students area and how will it help me?
The Students Area is a unique resource area especially for LHA students. It is accessible using a password and contains course manuals, videos, hypnotherapy scripts, articles and news.
What additional support will I get during my training?
As we teach small groups, everyone gets plenty of one-to-one attention during classroom sessions. Between classroom sessions students receive regular emails to check on their progress. If you have any concerns about your progress you are welcome to get in touch at any time so that we can offer you additional support if it's needed. We also have a closed Facebook group for students and graduates of LHA.
What feedback will I get on my practical work?
You will get regular verbal feedback during the practical sessions from the tutor as well as feedback from your fellow students. You will also get ongoing feedback and support throughout your training.
What help will I get after I've finished my course?
We'll keep in touch with you after you've finished your classroom training and until you've completed your HPD. You'll be invited back to any CPD events we host, some of which will qualify for a discount through our loyalty scheme. You can keep in touch via the LHA Facebook group and attend local peer group meetings.
What qualifications do I need to enrol?
We have an open access policy so no specific formal qualifications are required. We will, however, need to feel confident that you have suitable language and communication skills and will be able to cope with the academic requirements of the course. You will have a short interview (on the phone, via Zoom or face-to-face) before your application for a place can be processed.
I've never had hypnotherapy myself. Does this matter?
Many students are attracted to training to be a hypnotherapist because they have benefitted from hypnotherapy themselves. Whilst we recommend that you have some hypnotherapy sessions with a qualified therapist before you qualify, it isn't a requirement. You will experience giving and receiving hypnosis many times during your training.
What kind of people join this course?
People like you! It doesn't matter if you are a teacher, a mum returning to work, a civil servant, a sales assistant, a holistic therapist or fresh out of uni, as long as you have an interest in helping people, like learning, can communicate effectively and commit to completing the reading and studies required, you can enrol for one of courses. If you're not sure if it's for you, why not book to attend a Discovery Day?
When can I join the course?
There are five start dates per year and you can start with any module. Our training is comprised of 5 x equal modules so you can join the training cycle at any point, so there's no need to wait to get started training for your new career!
Practice set-up & development
Your training is described as practice-ready. What does this mean?
It means that we see ourselves as more than a training course provider. We want all our students to go on to become successful therapists, so our training is designed to help you achieve this. You'll learn all the academic stuff you need and in addition you'll learn about marketing a therapy business. You'll get tips on how to build your client base and sustain your practice.
When will I be ready to set up in practice?
You'll be ready to start seeing paying clients as soon as you have received your college diploma and have arranged your professional insurance.
Will I get any help in setting up my hypnotherapy practice?
We want all our graduates to become successful therapists, so throughout your training, you'll receive guidance on how to prepare for and set up your practice.
I want to change career to become a full-time therapist. Is that realistic?
Definitely! There are lots of people out there who need help to change how they feel or behave, so there's no shortage of work. You'll need to work hard at marketing your practice and we'll provide you with lots of help and advice on how to do that.
